今日仕事してたら出てきた"yield"。イマイチ違いが分からないなーと思って調べたら、案の定載ってました。「英語類義語活用辞典」に。引用(pgs. 360-361)してみます。

　この2つはともに戦っている相手に屈することだが、言葉の性格は同じではない。とくに"surrender"を"yield"で代用するわけにはいかない。なぜか？まず"surrender"は敗戦を認める (acknowledge defeat) ことで、文字通り「敵の軍門に降る」という感情も含んだストレートな言葉であって、比喩的にはあまり使わない。
　(1) Japan's surrender in 1945 (1945年の日本の敗戦)
Japan surrendered to the United States Army in 1945. と言ってもむろん同じである。"surrender"は最も一般的な言葉で、軍事的には"capitulate" (名詞は"capitulation") である。これは勝者の指定する条件に従って降伏することである。"surrender"はcapitulateのほかにも様々な言い方がある。その中で有名なのをあげると、
show [wave] the white flag; strike one's flag; lay down one's arms; throw in the towel; bite the dust などがあるが、"yield"とは言わない。なぜか？まず"surrender"とその類語は、強者の力に負けたことを、武器を投げ出すことにより、あるいは白旗を掲げることによって表明する、当事者にとって不本意な行為である。どんなにいやでもそうせざるを得ないからそうするわけである。だが"yield"のほうはもっとずっと日常的な言葉で、相手の力に屈服することに対した嫌悪感を持たない言葉である。また相手が優者であるかどうかもはっきりしない、ただ儀礼的な場合もある。
　(2) He yielded the floor to his opponent. これは議員などが相手側の議員に縁談をゆずったことで、これはそうすることになっているから、発言の場を相手に譲ったのかもしれないし、時間がきたからかもしれないのである。
　(3) She yielded to her seducer only with a token struggle. (彼女はほんの申しわけ程度の抵抗をしただけで、女たらしに身をまかせてしまった)
"yield"は人間の場合は、このようにsexual implicationのある言葉だが、同じ意味では作物などに広く使う。その場合は、人間の働きかけ(耕作)に応えて実を結ぶ、の意味からである。
　(4) The fertile soil yields a wealth of crops every year. (この辺の沃土からは毎年多様な野菜の豊かな生産がある)
しかし"yield"は次のようにごく日常的な力関係をあらわすのがより普通な使い方で、これはむろん "surrender"や"capitulate"では代用できない。
　(5) The ground beneath their feet became increasingly yielding, as if it were afloat. -- Hitchcock. (彼らの踏みしめる地面はだんだん軟化し、まるで根なし草の浮上物の上を歩くような感じになった)

Collins COBUILD Advanced Learner's English Dictionaryには以下のように説明されています。

surrender
1. (VERB) if you surrender, you stop fighting or resisting someone and agree that you have been beaten.
General Martin Bonnet called on the rebels to surrender...
She surrendered to the police in London last December.
(N-VAR) Surrender is also a noun.
...the government's apparent surrender to demands made by the religious militants.
2. (VERB)If you surrender something you would rather keep, you give it up or let someone else have it, for example after a struggle.
Nadia had to fill out forms surrendering all rights to her property.

3. (VERB) If you surrender something such as a ticket or your passport, you give it to someone in authority when they ask you to.

yield
1. (VERB) If you yield to someone or something, you stop resisting them.
[FORMAL] Will she yield to growing pressure for her to retire?...
If the government does not yield, it should face sufficient military force to ensure its certain and swift defeat.
2. (VERB, = surrender) If you yield something that you have control of or responsibility for, you allow someone else to have control or responsibility for it.
[FORMAL] He may yield control.
3. (VERB) If a moving person or a vehicle yields, they slow down or stop in order to allow other people or vehicles to pass in front of them.
[AM] When entering a train or starting a descent, yield to other skiers.
...examples of common sighs like No Smoking or Yield.

4. (VERB) If something yields, it breaks or moves position because force or pressure has been put on it.
The door yielded easily when he pushed it.
5. (VERB) If an area of land yields a particular amount of a crop, this is the amount that is produced. You can also say that a number of animal yield a particular amount of meant.
Last year 400,000 acres of land yielded a crop worth $1.75 billion.
6. (N-COUNT) A yield is the amount of food produced on an area of land or by a number of animals.
